In 2023, after fifty-two seasons in Junior B, the Niagara Falls Canucks applied for and were granted reclassification to Junior A, joining the Ontario Junior Hockey League for 2023-24. It brought the level back to Niagara Falls forty-seven years after Russell Masterson gave up the city’s last Tier II franchise, and the city had gone without it ever since.
Junior A hockey at the Gale Centre
The Canucks have been part of this city since 1971, held by just three families across fifty-five years and two Ontario championships. Their alumni include two Stanley Cup winners: Frank Pietrangelo, who played for the Canucks in 1979-80 and won with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991, and Gilbert Dionne, who played from 1986 to 1988 and won with the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. The Canucks play and practice in the 2,170-seat Rink 1 of the Gale Centre in Niagara Falls. The building is barrier-free and fully accessible, with four NHL-sized ice surfaces, a full-service concession with bar, a pro shop with skate sharpening and a state-of-the-art sound system, that’s minutes from the world-famous Niagara Falls. It is no wonder the Canucks attract some of the best junior hockey players from around the world.
